Faith, Hope, Love in action was the theme of the Christian Missions Education Event at Lambuth University July 15-17 2010. The symbol used of God's hand holding the world, Hope; the heart , love and the cross, Faith was carried out throughout the three studies. Betty Jo Masters, and Dr. David Hilliard led the spiritual growth study, "The Love of God, John Letters', in which we were reminded, even though we are different, we are all connected in unity by God's love and we should look for that love in each other. The social action study was "Joy to the World: Mission in the Age of Global Christianity." This was led by Rev. Gregory Waldrop and Rev. Michael Blake. why are we involved in missions and how do we, by word and actions, make known the love and saving grace of Jesus Christ to others. Rev. Roger Hopson was the study leader for Sudan, The study helped us to understand some of the situations our Christians brothers and sisters face in others parts of the world. The Youth study, "Embracing The World: Faith, Hope, Love in Action" was led by Mary Lou Wurth and the children study, "Hugging The World: Faith, Hope, Love in Action", was led by Sandy Maundy. Friday morning two of our visitors, Eric and Elizabeth Soard, who have just returned after several months in Tanzania spoke at length with our youth class. In the afternoon they shared their story with the adult students. We were spiritually blessed and uplifted in music and song by our song leader, Marilyn Ramsey, our Conference Spiritual Growth person, our pianist Leah Jean Rollins and Sherry Gibson, two of our visitors. Registrar, Kaye Poyner, reported we had 95 in attendance, Asbury had the most attendance with 23; Brownsville 18; Dyersburg 22; Jackson 5; McKendree 15; Paducah 7; and Paris 5, in addition we had four visitors. Fourteen of the students were first-timers. The displays in the learning center around the ballroom were WONDERFUL. They offered information on the issues studied and various mission programs in the Memphis Conference. Pat Calhoun had tables set up in the hall with information and patterns for making baby bed jackets, hats and booties, plus other care kits for local projects. There were also information sheets for several different disaster kits for UMCOR. As usual she had a table with reading materials that could be used for devotionals and programs. Linda Akers reported the Southeastern Jurisdiction 2012 Quadrennial meeting will be in Birmingham, Alabama, June 1-2 2012 at the Sheraton Birmington hotel. Our plenary on Friday night focused on Sudan. We were blessed to have Beth Brown and Rev. Michael Blake, of the Dyersburg district, who recently returned from a VIM trip to Sudan with the Holston Conference, share with us their slides and experiences of the work going on in that area of the world for the Lord and the people. We were visited by "Aunt Bee", Donna Moore our Conference Program Resources person and "Barney", Annette Moore our Conference Membership Nurture and Outreach person, telling of the great selection of books for our reading programs, that were in the Book-Nook. Participants enjoyed Morning Watch outside on the patio in the fresh air and listening to the birds sing. The devotionals were led by the Asbury and Brownsville districts. We are promised where two or three are gathered together in Christ's name, he will be there also and we know God always keeps his promises. Barbara Boden Dean, CMEE 2010 |
